The Importance Of Heroism - 854 Words
SUPERMAN AWAAAAAAAAY!†Yes, let us ditch the superhero charade and talk about the real world heroes. When people usually think of heroes they think of Superman or Spiderman or whomever. But not many people stop and think about the real heroes in the real world, such as policeman, firefighters, doctors etc. Heroism is a lot more than some ink on a comic book page. It is the reward of being, helping, or becoming a hero. Heroes get to inspire the next generation to take their place. Heroism involves inspiring because heroes need the courage to face a challenge and to overcome that challenge without being cowardly. Heroism is supposed to inspire other people to take a heros place because they can not do that on their own. In the poem,†¦show more content†¦And where my arm had been torn away. A wing grew†(Cassian). It took courage in order to go from being half of what he once was to becoming whole again. This man managed to accomplish this by staying determined and forward thinking. It takes courage in order to go against the norm. The norm is that most other people that lose a limb give up. This man decided that the norm was not for him so he vowed to work twice as hard to accomplish his goal. In the beginning of the poem the man was pessimistic and depressed, but towards the end, he finds the strength and courage that he needs to press on with the daily demands of life. If that is not an example of courage then I do not know what is. A hero does not cower in the face of danger or even death. They face their fears in order to get what needs to be done, completed. In the excerpt, The Definition of a Gentleman, the author describes what a gentleman can and cannot do. When the author starts saying that gentleman cannot make other people feel inferior it says, â€Å"He is never mean or little in his disputes, never takes unfair advantage, never mistakes personalities or sharp sayings for arguments, or insinuates evil which he dare not say out†(Newman). Cowards make other people feel inferior, they take unfair advantage, and they start disputes. A gentleman or a hero, in this case, will not do any cowardly acts. Critique of â€Å"Our Wall†In â€Å"Our Wall†, the author, Charles Bowden gives a detailed account of the conflict associated with the wall along the United States-Mexico border. The author makes his points through interviews with many different people along both sides of the border along with historical events and facts. Bowden is a very credible source, with years of experience working in the area and creates a very thorough account of the issue. The author seems to take a stance against the wall, but he does point out the other side of the argument and things that could be good about it. I wish the author would have made his viewpoints more clear because they are a little bit hard to pick up on. To do this, the author explains that people use coyotes or hired guides and are often put in more dangerous situations. It is easy to develop a counter argument to this point, t hough I agree with the author. One could just say that the United States should not be concerned with the safety of the people crossing the border, since they are doing it illegally. The author uses quotes from people who have made the trip or have firsthand experience. The author also uses firsthand stories from people to show the ineffectiveness of the wall. One specific story the author mentions is of a man on the Mexican side who lives close to the wall and jumps it regularly just to go to a bar and then comes back the same night. I think this story is already proving that the wall is ineffective and with time it will become more ineffective. With the ineffectiveness increasing so is the support. One man interviewed said â€Å"When they first built it, it was not a bad ideaâ€â€cars were crossing illegally from Mexico and the Border Patrol would chase them. Handmaids tale Essay Does the women of Gilead know that they are being controlled?Are the women of Gilead aware that they are being controlled by the society? In Margaret Atwoods The Handmaids Tale, the theme of control is a very important factor of the book. In the story, at the Republic of Gilead, the women are being controlled by the society to do what the society wants them to do. The handmaids are brainwashed before they start working for the society. But since the brainwashing happens so naturally over a period of time, the handmaids dont fully realize that they have been brainwashed by the society to do what the society wants them to do. The theme of control and being brainwashed could be found in many parts of books in many forms. For example, before the women became handmaids, they were at a institution where they get educated and influenced by the aunts on how they should live their lives. In the institution, the aunts treat the women like children. But whose fault was it? Aunt Helena says, holding up on plump finger.(93), aunts ask such questions, which leads the women to think the way the society wants them to think. Her fault, her fault, her fault, we chant in unison.(94), and the women repeats the answer out loud as a whole as if they were young kindergartners, and by doing so, they are being influenced and brainwashed. By treating them like children and making them repeat after what they say, they slowly influence the women, leading the women to think the way the society wants them to think. Another example of the society trying to influence the women could be found when the Offred describes the part where the household assembles for the ceremony at the sitting room. The house hold waits for the commander to arrive, and until than they always watch the news on the television which Serena Joy turns on. But we can also realize that Offred has doubts about whether the news is real or not. Who knows if any of it is true? It could be old clips, it could be faked.(105). Although shes having doubts, she still cant fight it off. As she watches the news, she runs into this part where the anchorman appears in the screen explaining the situation, and tells the viewers that everything will be fine. At this part, she feels that she is being brainwashed by the anchorman. I struggle against him. Hes like and old movie star, I tell myself, with false teeth and a face job. At the same time I sway towards him, like one hypnotized. If only it were true. If only I could believe.(107). Altho ugh she knows that shes being brainwashed she cant fight it back, and even wants to believe the news since she feels that it would be the best for her that if the anchorman was telling the truth. Although Offred sort of realizes that she is being controlled, she cant fight it back. It happened so gradually over a long period of time that she cant change it. And she is even used to it in a way that she wants to believe what the news tells her. The rest of the women in Gilead probably feels the same. Some of them might not know that they are being brainwashed, but they are being brainwashed and used by the society to the societys needs.
